The son of a clammer, admiralty lawyer Edward R. Petkevis spent much of his life on the ocean and bays of Atlantic County New Jersey. Ed Petkevis began his legal career as a Proctor in Admiralty law when, in 1986, he earned his LL.M in Admiralty Law from Tulane Law School. Tulane’s Admiralty Law LL.M., program is an intensive program, requiring additional time, training and education in law school, and is the only major maritime law program in the United States. Most other admiralty law programs are taught in Europe and Britain, including those at Southampton, Lund, Nottingham, Bristol, and Swansea, and the specialized institutes at the University of Oslo and the International Maritime Law Institute in Malta.

Ed Petkevis is licensed in every major maritime jurisdiction, having passed consecutive bar exams in Florida, New Jersey, Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Illinois. He is also licensed in the federal jurisdictions of these states, and also the federal courts of New York. Edward R. Petkevis began his practice in New Orleans, where he represented various interests involved in offshore drilling. From Louisiana, he traveled to Chicago, where his practice primarily involved the defense of claims against cargo ships, cruise lines, and large companies. He represented most of the major shipping companies, including Lykes Marine, American Commercial Barge Lines, Hyundai Marine, Maersk, and their insurance companies, including Lloyd’s of London, Steamship Mutual, Britania, North of England, and the Standard. His representation included the defense of claims brought against various cruise lines, including Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean.

His practice has taken him throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, and even as far as Istanbul. He left Chicago in 1995 to return to his roots in Southern New Jersey, where he founded the Land and Sea Law Offices of Edward R. Petkevis PC. The focus of the practice is now on the individual. The experience that he gained in defending vessel interests and insurance companies is now best put to use to gain justice for individuals injured as a result of shipowner’s negligence.
